World Diabetes Day: Sport as an ally in the management of diabetes

World Diabetes Day: Sport as an ally in the management of diabetes

On World Diabetes Daywe want to highlight the importance of sports in managing this condition. Regular exercise not only helps control glucose levels but also improves cardiovascular health and emotional well-being.

A great example of this is our player, Álex Ruiz, who lives with this disease. Álex shows us that being diabetic does not limit you at all. For him, his condition has not been an obstacle but rather a motivation to fulfill his dream and become one of the best padel players internationally.

To better understand how sports influence diabetes, Francisco García Ruiz, one of our doctors, has answered some key questions:

What is Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and how many types are there? What is the difference between each type?

DM is a chronic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels. This can cause damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, nerves, and kidneys. There are 2 types:

  • Type DM, where the pancreas does not produce insulin.
  • Type DM, where the dody does not use insulin effectively. Each type requires a different approach to treatment and management.

What benefits does exercise provide to a person with diabetes?

Engaging in sports can offer numerous benefits to a person with diabetes:

  • It improves insulin sensitivity
  • Reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications
  • Helps control weight
  • Reduces stress
  • Improves overall quality of life

What are the general recommendations for a person with diabetes to exercise safely?

Actualmente el deporte se practica en múltiples modalidades y con entrenamientos muy específicos. Existen unos factores que influyen en un diabético a la hora de practicar deporte:

  • Tipe of physical exercise: cardiovascular endurance or muscle strength.
  •  Intensity: light, moderate or high.
  • Duration: short (<20 min), medium (20-60 min) or long (>60 min).
  • Frecuency: consecutive days or alternate days.
  • Time of day: early morning.
  • the athlete's fitness level.
  • Competition stres

The best advice is to know yourself and try, with careful control, different options for insulin regulation/nutrition during the sport you practice. It is advisable to monitor glucose leveles before, during and after exercise; you can use a diary to note your readings, although ther are already mobile apps that control insuline pumps. Additionally, it is important to stay well-hydrated and adjust your diet to avoid spikes or drops in blood sugar.

This World Diabetes Day is an excellent opportunity to remember how sports can be a key tool in managing diabetes, improving the physical and mental health of those living with this condition. However, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any exercise routine to ensure that it is safe and suitable for your individual needs. And don't forget to enjoy the pleasure of exercising, the sense of achievement that comes with each workout and competition!
