Marta Ortega wins in Rome after epic final

Marta Ortega and her playing partner Gemma Triay made history by becoming the first women to win a Premier Padel tournament by defeating Ari Sánchez y Paula Josemaría 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in an all-time classic in Rome.
The adidas player, looking to build on winning in Alicante earlier this season, capped a wonderful week in the Italian capital by lifting the trophy having seen off the number 1 ranked pair.
Martita in fine form throughout
Marta and Gemma went into the match having not dropped a set in the tournament, and saw off the Alayeto twins in the semi-final with relative ease. But the prospect of facing the top-ranked pair was a much tougher assignment.
However, Martita and Gemma looked solid in the opening set in front of a packed house and broke Ari and Paul on their first service game while holding their two first service games to race into a 3-0 lead. The pair were relentless in their rallies and accurate with their serve and broke once again to close out the first set 6-3.
Top-ranked pair respond to setback
Ari and Paula were bound to respond at some point, and they did just that in the second set. Try as the might, Martita and Gemma couldn’t quite keep the pace and were broken in the sixth game of the set, which went on the end 3-6, to take the match into the decider.

The final set was full of drama and emotion. Martita and Gemma seemed to raise their game even further, determined to become the first women ever to lift the Premier Padel title - the new tour set up by the International Padel Federation (FIP), and backed by the Qatar Sports Investment. When they broke Ari and Paula to move 4-1 up, it looked all but over. But the top seeds had other ideas, and broke back to equal in the final set. However, Martita and Gemma were able to put in one last huge effort and saw out the set 7-5 to win after three hours on court and spark jubilant scenes.
