The Fridge in Padel: Why It works, when to use it and how to break It

The Fridge in Padel: Why It works, when to use it and how to break It

The fridge is one of the best-known tactical strategies in padel. It consists of directing most of the balls towards one opponent in order to reduce their partner's involvement and influence the rival pair's game.
Although it is often associated with differences in skill level, it is not always used against the weaker player. Sometimes the objective is to prevent the most decisive player from influencing the match.
However, using the fridge does not mean playing 100% of the balls to the same player. In fact, becoming too predictable can backfire.

When does it make sense to use it?

The fridge can be effective when there is a clear tactical reason.
It is commonly used when:
  • One player is making too many unforced errors.
  • There is a noticeable difference in level between opponents.
  • One player is showing signs of fatigue.
  • The goal is to reduce the impact of the strongest player.
However, it does not always work. A player who receives too many balls may gain confidence, find rhythm and improve their performance.
That is why experienced pairs use the fridge as part of a broader game plan rather than a fixed strategy.

The real impact of the fridge: the mental side

Many players think the fridge is purely tactical. In reality, much of its effectiveness comes from the psychological side of the game.
When you go several points without touching the ball, it becomes easy to lose focus, lose rhythm or become frustrated.
The objective is not just to make you play less. The objective is to make you play worse when the ball finally comes your way.
If you feel you are being targeted:
  • Stay physically active between points.
  • Do not rush when the ball finally comes to you.
  • Keep communicating with your partner.
  • Avoid forcing winners out of frustration.
  • Stay patient and focused.

How to break the fridge

The solution does not depend solely on the isolated player. Both partners must work together.
Some tactical solutions include:
  • Playing more balls through the middle.
  • Using parallel shots to change the opponents' pattern.
  • Creating situations where the isolated player is forced back into play.
  • Adjusting positioning to cover more court.
Often, two or three quality interventions are enough to make opponents abandon the strategy.
The best way to escape the fridge is not to touch more balls. It is to make better use of the opportunities you get.
