Serve or receive? Which option is best in padel?
Every padel match starts with a simple question: serve or receive? When they win the toss, many players do not hesitate and automatically choose to serve. However, there is not always a right answer. What may be an advantage for one pair may not be for another. The key is understanding your game, your partner’s strengths, and how both of you feel on court.
Why many players prefer to serve
The main reason is simple: serving gives you the opportunity to take the net from the very first point. In padel, controlling the net usually means having more chances to attack, volley and dictate the pace of the rally. That is why many pairs see the first service game as an opportunity to impose their game from the start.
In addition, serving first can help you settle into the match with confidence. A solid opening game is often a good way to shake off nerves and start with positive feelings.
What about choosing to receive?
Receiving also has its advantages. Some players prefer to begin the match without the responsibility of serving. The first few points allow them to analyse their opponents, adapt to the court conditions and find their rhythm before taking greater risks.
There is also the possibility of securing an early break. Starting the set ahead on the scoreboard is always a comfortable position to be in.
For players who excel in defence or feel particularly confident when returning serve, this option may even be the most suitable.
Not every player should make the same choice
The answer depends largely on your playing style.
If you and your partner feel comfortable at the net, enjoy applying pressure with your volleys and like to take the initiative, serving first will probably be the best option.
If, on the other hand, you need a few rallies to settle into the match or your strengths lie in defence and point construction, starting by receiving may help you find your rhythm more effectively.
Other factors such as player level, court speed and weather conditions can also influence the decision. Every match is different.
The best choice is the one that suits your game
Beyond theory, there is no universal formula.
Serving brings you closer to the net and an attacking position. Receiving allows you to adapt to the match from the very first moment. Both options can be the right choice if they fit the way you play.
The next time you win the toss, do not choose out of habit. Think about what can benefit your pair the most and make the decision with a clear strategy from the very first point.
